Portland sets aside Sh30m for Maasai girls

East African Portland Cement has launched a Sh30 million project to offer the Maasai girl child the opportunity to attend school without being exposed to early forced marriages or female genital mutilation.

The Sh30 million support for Kabini Primary School includes drilling of four boreholes, construction and maintenance of water dams and the construction of a 100-beds capacity dormitory for girls at the school.

The package also includes bonus pay for academic staff, repairing burnt staffhouses, and building two new water dams. Portland will also maintain the existing dams, and construct a three kilometer water pipe trench.

I will also provide security for the school, to keep the young girls safe from being married off early.

Only girls will enjoy boarding facilities at the school, while the boys will continue being day scholars.

“Girls are more vulnerable to disturbances than boys. That is why our focus is on the girls,” said the firm's managing director, Zakayo Ole Mapelu who accompanied the area MP Retired General Joseph Nkaisery during the formal project launch.

Mapelu said Portland said has come up with a re-energized Corporate Social Responsibility programme, that places a huge premium on the Maasai girl-child.
