The East African Portland Cement Company has been praised for its effort to conserve the environment.
Mrs Betty Nzioka, the National Environment Management Authority’s Acting Director in charge of Environmental Education, Conservation and Public Participation, said Portland’s compliance with conservation policies and legislation was at a very high level.
“We at Nema have no issues with you. We know you have been very keen on conserving the environment as it is required of you,” she said during a function organised by Portland to mark the World Environment Day in Athi River.
Mrs Nzioka and Mr Kagio Ndegwa, Portland’s Acting Managing Director, agreed to work together to ensure the company’s participation in conservation and compliance with the statutory requirements was taken to a higher level through what she described as “negotiated approach to compliance”.
Mr Ndegwa and the Nema official led Portland employees and members of the local community in planting seedlings in a selected area within the company’s premises.
The MD made a reassurance that Portland would not relax its conservation efforts, adding that the company would seek increased collaboration with Nema to strengthen its participation in conserving the environment.
The day was the climax of the Portland Environment Week marked with conservation activities, which saw Portland staff plant seedlings in Busia, Kakamega, Njoro and Nyahururu.
Mr Alex Mutisya, the Acting General Manager-Works, said the company planned to plant a million seedlings as a way of expressing its solidarity with the global resolve to fight climate change.
“We established the Safety, Health and Environment section in 2002 to enable the company identify and implement environmental management projects and ensure compliance with the Environmental Management and Coordination Act of 1999,” he said. |
